05 - Wrapping and felting the fibre

Lissome Balls - Wrapping and felting the fibre

Wrap fibres in thin layers around the ball. Spray with soapy water and rub each layer gently before adding the next layer. Place fibre both lengthways and crossways, as in flat felting. Keep adding layers, soaping and rubbing until the desired thickness is achieved. It's better to be too thick than too thin.

Add embellishments as you like - here I've used merino and silk. The body of the bowl is a Romney:Icelandic crossbred fleece which felts well with a smooth finish.

Turn the bowl inside out, then rub with soapy water on a washboard or similar surface. Rub until the interior of the bowl is firm and well felted.

Dry the finished bowl on a raised wire surface. Stuff the bowl with newspapers to keep its shape during the drying process.
